I had great fun connecting with representatives from the Tourism Authority of Thailand promoting Thailand as a destination to travellers in India. Nearly 2 million Indian travellers visited Thailand in 2024 making India one of the top outbound markets for Thailand.
Ms Pattaraanong Na Chiangmai , the Deputy Governor for International Marketing (Asia and South Pacific) communicated the decision of the tourism authority of Thailand to position their nation as a ‘premium’ travel destination shifting the focus away from mass tourism that has dominated the Thai travel scene.
With a focus on wellness , destination weddings and cultural activities it seems like TAT might succeed in its goal, especially as Thailand shares deep cultural bonds with India through Buddhism, through the Thai language itself which has flavors of Sanskrit and Pali and of course through the fun festival of Songkran which is very similar to the wildly popular holi celebrations in India. The growing Indian diaspora in Thailand also organises festivals like Diwali giving more reasons for Indians to visit the nation.
The central problem of uneven tourist distribution in Thailand remains a bit of a concern, as it does with any other tourist destination. Popular beaches and cities become overcrowded during tourist season and the rest of the nation hardly sees any traffic causing a great mismatch between the overall tourism potential and the actual value it creates.
It's unlikely that a first time visitor would take a chance on a new destination; they would prefer what's popular to get the most value for their money. Domestic tourism however could sustain offbeat /unexplored locations until the word spreads and it becomes popular with international travellers as well. This is why it's important to market to both domestic and international tourists.
The Indian -Mayanmar -Thailand highway ,when it becomes functional, could open up new possibilities of business tourism. But in the meantime it may not be such a bad idea to create new travel experiences for tourists. Cruises from coasts in south and east India to coasts in Thailand could become popular ,premium travel experiences as the TAT envisions. Visas on arrival for Indians have made travelling to Thailand a bit easier. The natural next step would be a single visa system for a visit to any/all ASEAN nations giving travellers more options to choose from and enriching their holiday experience. Can that happen? I hope it does.
